Lackawanna County Families Find Relief at Salvation Army Utility Assistance Event

Dec 30, 2025

As utility costs rise and benefit delays strain household budgets, The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps stepped in to offer hope and practical help. On November 5, 2025, the Corps hosted a Customer Assistance Event from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., connecting Lackawanna County residents directly with utility providers and much-needed relief programs.

Held in partnership with UGI Utilities, Pennsylvania American Water, and PPL Utilities, the event brought together each company’s Customer Outreach team for one-on-one, face-to-face assistance. Residents were able to explore payment assistance options, enroll in programs tailored to their needs, and apply for utility grants designed to ease financial burdens during an especially uncertain season.

“Our neighbors have already been struggling this year,” said Captain Kirsten Childs, Corps Officer of The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps. “The SNAP and LIHEAP delays have compounded uncertainty and stress. We hope this event helps relieve some of the financial pressure our neighbors are feeling this fall.”

This marked the third Fall Customer Assistance Event hosted by the Scranton Citadel Corps, and Captain Childs emphasized its timeliness amid delayed SNAP benefits and the late start of the LIHEAP season. The Salvation Army plans to continue this vital outreach, with a Spring 2026 Customer Assistance Event scheduled to take place at the end of the winter utility moratorium, near the close of the LIHEAP season.

Through partnerships and compassionate service, The Salvation Army Scranton Citadel Corps remains committed to standing with local families—offering hope, relief, reassurance, and a path forward when it’s needed most.
