A Hometown Hero

May 3, 2019 | by Katherine Basaran

For Lowell Maxwell, helping others in his country and his community has been a lifelong passion. And as the Advisory Chairman of the Miami County Service Extension Unit, every day he has the opportunity to do just that.

When the Corps Community Center in Peru, Indiana closed a few years ago, The Salvation Army had to adjust to continue to meet the needs of the community.  There was a plan in place to start up a Service Extension unit and ensure there was not a gap left behind.  Lowell has played a huge part in making sure it was a smooth transition.  He has been, and continues to be, a strong force for good in Miami County.  He has personally provided many practical gifts and donations for the good of the cause. His primary passion is the food pantry that he oversees.  He makes sure it continues to grow year after year so that more people in need are able to come and get food for their families.

Lowell has also started an endowment called the Hometown Hero Endowment for Miami County.  A Hometown Heroes Endowment is one of the best ways to have a long-term impact on the people of the community in which you live. For more information on those, please visit our website here.

Lowell has been associated with The Salvation Army for many years in many different ways. Recently, he received a well-deserved award from the Lions Club to honor his commitment to giving back.  The award, titled the Melvin Jones Fellow, was given to him for his dedicated humanitarian services.  Since Lowell’s retirement from a career as a federal employee, he has given countless hours of volunteer service to Miami County through various agencies and institutions.  Join us in congratulating Lowell on this great honor!
