Volunteering During Coronavirus

Apr 1, 2020

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are those in our community who need our support now more than ever. However, it is also important to volunteer in ways that guarantee maximum safety for volunteers, staff, and the communities we serve. If you are looking for opportunities to serve during this time, we ask you to please consider the following guidelines to help you find the safest and most effective way to serve your local community.

  • Adhere to the public health protocols. Please practice things like social distancing to ensure the health of those around you. This may include distributing food boxes through a walk-up window to avoid face-to-face interaction, or assisting an individual over the phone, rather than in person.
  • Consider solo volunteer opportunities. There are plenty of fulfilling solo volunteer opportunities available in our communities, such as preparing food boxes, where you can make a difference while still practicing social distancing. While it's fun to volunteer with your friends and co-workers, you can have a satisfying volunteer experience with just 2 or 3 people!
  • If you are sick, please stay home and rest! We would rather you wait to volunteer until you are feeling well than risk the potential spreading of illness to others. If you are in an at-risk group for coronavirus, you may still be able to volunteer from your own home by helping with phone calls or other projects.

The Salvation Army is immensely thankful for all of the volunteers who serve our communities. We appreciate you following these guidelines in an effort to effectively serve those in need. To learn about volunteer needs in your community, connect with your local Salvation Army though our Location Search. If you have any questions about volunteer guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, please contact Divisional Volunteer Coordinator Stevi Cochrane at stevi.cochrane@usc.salvationarmy.org.
