Warming Centers & Shelters
Frigid temperatures continue to plague communities across Indiana, leaving many Hoosiers looking for warmth for themselves and their families. The Salvation Army works in conjunction with local governments and agencies to help those who are without sufficient heat in their homes or are currently living on the streets. The role The Salvation Army plays can vary, as each community has plans in place that are triggered by specific conditions, like temperature, wind chill, widespread power outages, and demand.
In Anderson, The Salvation Army has been activated as a daytime warming center as part of the citywide plan in place. Doors are open Monday thru Thursday 9 am - 5 pm and Fridays and Sundays 9 am - 1 pm. Individuals and families needing overnight sheltering are being housed at The Christian Center and Willow Place. Together, the three organizations are meeting the needs of their community during this dangerous cold streak.
For years, The Salvation Army in Madison has been a vital part of Jefferson County's emergency sheltering plan. An overnight shelter has been activated many times by The Salvation Army since January 28. The shelter is currently open 7:30 pm - 7:00 pm with a hot dinner served to guests. Other communities along the Ohio River are being served by The Salvation Army in New Albany. Daytime warming centers have been activated in both Floyd and Clark counties from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm to help local residents stay safe during daytime hours. With locations across the state, The Salvation Army is well-situated to be a part of local efforts during times of extreme weather.
The Salvation Army of Shelbyville is operating a 24-hour shelter in conjunction with Shelby County Emergency Management and the local health department. The focus is on helping to keep the local homeless population sheltered during the worst of the winter weather. Local businesses and churches have also stepped up to ensure that residents in the shelter are receiving hot meals and that The Salvation Army has the volunteers it needs to stay open around the clock. The Salvation Army has a year-round, six-days-a-week feeding program in Shelbyville, so homeless residents are very familiar with the facility and are comfortable finding shelter there. In Indianapolis, dozens of agencies and organizations are part of a city-wide plan that is implemented in several stages. During the current cold snap, The Salvation Army is assisting with feeding at a large overnight shelter operated by the Indianapolis Parks Department. In addition, the City has asked The Salvation Army to open daytime warming centers at our Fountain Square corps community center just south of downtown and at the Emergency Disaster Services Training Facility on the northwest side. Both will be open over the weekend 8 am - 8 pm as daytime temperatures remain well below freezing.
