With COVID-19, The Need is Greater

This holiday season, The Salvation Army expects to see a greater need for our services – more than any in recent history.

Unemployment rates are expected to be 10%-11% and based on the increased service we’ve already provided this year due to COVID-19, we need resources to serve up to 155% more people with Christmas assistance.

Sponsor a family that is in need through our Adopt-A-Family program. This program connects impoverished families with individual or group sponsors to provide gifts and tangible needs at Christmas.

Sponsors come in many shapes and sizes. They can be individuals, families, small businesses, or large corporations. Many sponsors find the experience so fulfilling that they participate in the program year after year.

Note: By registering for Adopt-A-Family the sponsor is committing to providing gifts for the entire family.

Help Rescue Christmas

COVID-19 has not only created a bigger need for us to fill, but it has also decreased the number of traditional red kettles you’re used to seeing on street corners and at store entrances each Christmas season. In fact, we could see up to a 50% decrease in red kettle funds this year due to several factors, including:

  1. Consumers carrying less cash and fewer coins
  2. More online shopping, which means less foot traffic in shopping areas
  3. Unemployment rates
  4. Recent closures of some brick-and-mortar retail stores

Our work this holiday season is going to be even more crucial to serving the most vulnerable – regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or gender orientation – in your community.

Brighten the holidays:

It’s that time of the year again when we look forward to spending time with family and friends. While you are busy preparing for the holidays, we ask that you don’t forget that there are many that go without during this time. Looking for ways to give back during the holidays? Here are three ways to get involved at The Salvation Army during the holiday season:

 Volunteer With Us

Whether it’s ringing bells during our most-famous Red Kettle campaign or serving food at one of our soup kitchens or sorting and wrapping gifts, the donation of time is one of the biggest gifts you can give The Salvation Army during the holidays.

 Stand at a Red Kettle

We are always looking for people to ring bells at our Red Kettles.

Sponsor a family that is in need through our Adopt-A-Family program. This connects impoverished families with individuals or groups to provide for their tangible needs at Christmas.

Summer Camp
The Salvation Army operates Camp Tecumseh for New Jersey families. Each summer more than 1000 children, seniors, and veterans attend Camp Tecumseh for a week at a time. Three camping programs are unique to Camp Tecumseh. The first is Reunion Camp, a session for young people in foster care. The second is Grands Camp, a session for families where a grandparent has custodial care of his or her grandchildren. Both the grandparent and grandchildren attend camp at the same time. The third session is Vets Camp serving veterans and their families.
Thanksgiving and Christmas
The Salvation Army aids thousands of New Jersey residents with toys, food, clothing, visitations, and other needs during the holidays. Contact your local Salvation Army to learn more about the programs offered in your community.
