The Salvation Army will distribute 3,000 bottles of all-purpose cleaner, donated by Giant Eagle, to those who need it in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Cleveland (March 20, 2023) –Thanks to the generosity of corporate partner Giant Eagle, The Salvation Army will continue to serve families and individuals impacted by February’s 50-car train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Giant Eagle has generously donated 3,000 bottles of all-purpose cleaner to The Salvation Army for distribution in both Ohio and Pennsylvania.

“We are extremely appreciative of the work The Salvation Army continues to do to support our neighbors in need in and around East Palestine,” said Giant Eagle Senior Director of Corporate Communications Dan Donovan. “Community organizations like The Salvation Army are critical resources for businesses like Giant Eagle to identify effective ways to meaningfully contribute in times of crisis, and we thank our partner for facilitating this product donation.”

The Salvation Army is providing water, food, cleaning supplies and spiritual care to families and individuals in Ohio and across state lines in Pennsylvania. Since the train derailment, The Salvation Army has distributed 11,837 cases of water, 3,300 gallons of water and 17,440 cleaning supplies to residents (stats as of March 13, 2023).

Salem OH February 22nd 2023 - A massive clean up effort has been underway over the last few week s due to a 50 car train derailment in East Palestine, OH. The Salvation Army has provided food, spiritual care, and other assistance to families impacted by this event.

“We are here to support our friends and neighbors in need no matter when they need it. No one should ever have to go through something like this alone. At The Salvation Army, we will be here with the residents of East Palestine even when they transition back to a state of normalcy after this terrible incident,” stated Captain Gene Spence, Commanding Corps Officer at The Salvation Army in Salem.

Since the train derailment, The Salvation Army has been onsite providing care to East Palestine residents & first responders:

  • 192 Meals Served provided to residents & first responders.
  • 393 Drinks were provided to residents & first responders.
  • 679 Snacks were provided to residents & first responders.
  • 1,180 Clean-up kits distributed to residents.
  • 3,981 Cleaning Supplies distributed to residents.
  • 126 Hygiene Kits distributed to residents.
  • 161 Articles of Clothing were provided to residents.
  • Over 3,000 people served.
  • Over 7,300 Households helped.
  • Transported five individuals from the Shelter back to their Homes.
  • 91 Emotional and Spiritual Care Support Contacts Provided
  • 6,406 cases of Water distributed to residents.

What: Salvation Army volunteers and staff will be unloading a tractor tailor filled with 24 pallets of cleaning supplies to assist those impacted. The tractor trailer will deliver these supplies to The Salvation Army Corps in Salem, OH. Once unloaded, the supplies will be delivered using disaster response vehicles to East Palestine.

Why: Massive cleanup efforts are underway as a result of a 50-car train derailment last Friday in Easy Palestine, OH. The Salvation Army has been providing food and other assistance to families impacted by this event and will be assisting with the distribution of cleaning kits, and other supplies.

We received a donation of water from the Fort Worth Police Department, who drove over 30 hours to donate a truckload of bottled water to the East Palestine community. Columbiana County OH March 1st 2023- As the massive clean up effort continues following the 50 car train derailment in East Palestine, OH on February 3rd 2023, The Salvation Army has now expanded the relief effort to areas throughout Columbiana County The Salvation Army continues providing food, spiritual care, and other assistance to families impacted by this event.
“It has been close to a month since the derailment, and the needs in the East Palestine community are greater than ever. Residents are concerned about the safety of being in their homes. Fears around tainted water supplies have created concerns about using the water for drinking and bathing. We are here 24-7 to provide water and cleaning supplies and to be a listening ear of support. The Salvation Army will not just be here to help residents through this disaster. We are part of this community and will always be here to help our neighbors in need,” stated Captain Gene Spence, Commanding Corps Officer at The Salvation Army in Salem. "The outpouring of support from the people in Ohio and across the Nation has been inspiring. This incredible outpouring of support shows us that East Palestine is loved and will be supported through this long-term recovery effort,” continued Captain Spence.

The Salvation Army in East Liverpool is now coordinating relief operations in southern Columbiana County. Residents in need of aid can contact The Salvation Army Corps Community Center, located at 413 East 4th Street, East Liverpool, OH 43920, by calling (330) 385-2086.

“We are now starting to see the expansive and long-term effect of the derailment. East Liverpool, Wellsville, and Calcutta residents fear that recent rain has spread the contaminants to local water supplies. As a result, our Corps will offer daily water case distributions to serve residents in these affected areas. In less than two weeks, we have distributed over 500 cases of water and expect to see this number continue to increase over the upcoming weeks,” said Major Stephanie Larrick, Commanding Corps Officer at The Salvation Army in East Liverpool.
