The Salvation Army of Bristol Celebrates 140 Years of Service to the Community

Oct 28, 2025

BRISTOL, Conn. — On a crisp late October morning, community members, city leaders, and advisory board members gathered at The Salvation Army on Stearns Street to celebrate 140 years of continuous service by The Salvation Army to the people of Bristol.

On the steps of the historic chapel, the atmosphere was filled with gratitude and hope. “Good morning and welcome!” said Debbie Camner, Divisional Advancement Director for The Salvation Army. “We’re here to honor our past and celebrate our future. The Salvation Army of Bristol is one of the oldest Salvation Army locations in the country. Today, we give thanks for 140 years of faith and service.”

Founded in 1885, the Bristol Corps opened its doors when there were only a dozen Salvation Army outposts in the United States. Today, fewer than a handful can boast such a legacy. Through world wars, economic downturns, and times of community triumph, the Corps has been a steady force for good.

“Not a day passes by where good isn’t coming from 19 Stearns Street,” said Captain Dustin Fitch. “Whether it’s packing food boxes or serving hot meals, hosting music lessons or sending children to camp, there’s so much good happening here every single day."

That spirit of service is carried on by Captain Dustin and his wife Captain Georges-Junie Fitch, who co-minister in Bristol and oversee programs such as the food pantry, soup kitchen, creative arts and music programs, youth camps, and emergency assistance for families in need.

“We believe the best days for the Bristol Corps are yet ahead,” said Captain Dustin. “The Bible reminds us that ‘where there is no vision, the people perish.’ The Salvation Army is called to put feet to its faith, and that’s exactly what The Salvation Army in Bristol continues to do.”

Among those celebrating the milestone was Bristol Mayor Jeff Caggiano, who presented a proclamation recognizing The Salvation Army’s 140 years of service. “The Salvation Army of Bristol is a valued partner, and the City of Bristol is honored to support its efforts now and well into the future,” the mayor said. “The City of Bristol is grateful for The Salvation Army's effort in making an impact on our local community for the past 140 years.”

Major Richard Lopez, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army Southern New England Division, praised Captains Dustin and Junie Fitch as “humble, quiet servants” who lead by example, living out the spirit of the Good Samaritan, serving “with compassion and without discrimination.”

As the ceremony closed in prayer, there was a sense that Bristol’s Salvation Army family wasn’t just celebrating the past, but looking to the future.

“The Salvation Army has been here through two world wars, through conflicts and celebration alike, and we’ll be here for the next 140 years,” states Captain Dustin Fitch. “We thank you, our partners in the community of Bristol, for helping to make that happen.”
