Serving With Grace
We met Graciela as she was serving coffee and snacks to residents displaced by a flood at a Clearwater apartment complex. As we approached, we learned that Graciela works for The Salvation Army in Clearwater. On Columbus Day, instead of taking a well-deserved break, she dedicated her time to serving the community alongside our Canteen crew. Her sons were right there with her, helping to stack cases of water. Even on her day off, Graciela embodied the mission and spirit of The Salvation Army by choosing to serve those in need.
Individuals like Graciela exemplify dedication and selflessness, often putting the needs of others before their own. Their unwavering commitment to service reminds us of the profound impact that one person's kindness can have during a crisis. These acts of generosity inspire us all to come together as a community and support one another in times of hardship.
The flooding forced 500 residents from their Clearwater apartment complex to evacuate. What began with Graciela offering coffee and snacks has grown into a larger relief effort. Thanks to the generosity of the community, donations of clothing, baby supplies, toys, bedding, canned goods, and more continue to pour in.
The overwhelming response from local businesses and individuals shows the strength and resilience of our community. Their willingness to step up and provide essential supplies and support to those in need brings hope and comfort to the evacuees during this challenging time.
It’s been inspiring to witness this outpouring of love and generosity, alongside The Salvation Army’s unwavering commitment to serving those in need. To date, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services team has provided 519 meals, 425 drinks, 517 snacks, and emotional and spiritual care to 59 individuals in Clearwater. This is a testament to the power of community and the impact of compassion in times of crisis.
