Bristol, CT teen discovers musical talent at The Salvation Army

Adrianna’s family struggled with homelessness for years and didn’t always have enough to eat.  Coming to the Bristol Corps Food Pantry meant that at least her family would no longer be skipping meals.

But hunger was only one of the problems Adrianna was facing.  As a result of not having a place to call home, she was falling behind in school.

“I felt like a lost girl, scared of what my life was going to be,” she admits.

That changed when Adrianna showed up at the food pantry with her mom, and was invited to attend The Salvation Army’s Creative Arts and Music Academy at no cost to her family.  To her surprise, Adrianna not only discovered musical talent she never knew she had, but received tutoring that helped her get her grades back on track.

What started out as a request for food led Adrianna to a place where she could feel safe, be fed, and grow – emotionally and spiritually.  “Never doubt the power of a bag of groceries given in Jesus’ name,” says Captain Shareena Echavarria, the Corps officer in Bristol.
