Food Assistance Requests Increase at The Salvation Army in Greater Cleveland

Feb 14, 2024

Cleveland, OH (February 15th, 2024) – The need for support throughout Greater Cleveland has been growing rapidly for The Salvation Army in Greater Cleveland. With rising inflation, local Clevelanders feel the pinch as food and household goods are more expensive. As a result, The Salvation Army in Greater Cleveland has started to see a rise in demand for food assistance at each of their local food pantries.

“Across Greater Cleveland, our five Corps Community Centers are witnessing increases in weekly demand for food.   For example, in the West Park area, we had a 28% increase in food pantry assistance from January 2022 to February 2023. Our pantries are here to help serve individuals and families during these difficult times,” stated Captain Joel Ashcraft, Divisional Secretary of Greater Cleveland Area Services.

The Salvation Army has five Corps Community Centers located in central neighborhoods in Greater Cleveland, all of which have active food pantries for families and individuals in need of assistance. The organization reports that it helped over 70,000 residents throughout Cuyahoga County with food assistance, hot meals, and food pantries in 2023.

“We expect this demand for food assistance to increase as long as grocery prices and inflation remain high. Food is traditionally the first thing sacrificed in order to pay for other essential items like rent and utilities. That is where we step into support; our doors are open to help all those who need assistance. We are here to make life better, keep bellies full, and meet the needs of our communities,” continued Ashcraft.
