Rhode Island’s Red Kettle Dream Team
The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign continues to be an iconic part of the Christmas season. For the past 25 years, the Rhode Island Salvation Army has joined with the Fogarty Center, one of the largest nonprofits in the Ocean State, to hire a “dream team” of adults with disabilities to ring bells for The Salvation Army during the busy holiday season. The Fogarty Center has been a valuable partner in providing these much-needed services with a heartwarming twist for decades now. David C. Reiss, Chief Executive Officer of the Fogarty Center, said that the alliance with The Salvation Army “encourages and supports community participation and inclusion aiding society as a whole. We greatly value our partnership and the difference we can make together!”
Major Steven Lopes, a long-standing officer and Rhode Island Salvation Army State Coordinator, has become a large part of this collaboration. When his daughter Nicole was born with physical disabilities, he became sensitive to disabled children and learned a great deal about their challenges. “It made me realize that not all of society recognizes or acknowledges all of us,” said Major Lopes. He was determined to make an intentional commitment to help. "The partnership between the Rhode Island Salvation Army and the Fogarty Center is yet another example of communities joining together for the common good of others. I have found that building partners for the service of others often leads to kingdom success,” said Major Lopes.
Recently, Major Lopes was invited to present awards to the Fogarty Center kettle workers who have gone above and beyond for The Salvation Army. The inspiring event at Fogarty Center brimmed with inclusivity and pride. The bell ringers were recognized for their exceptional customer service, friendly attitudes, and valuable contributions. The individuals proudly received accolades and appreciation comments such as, "he always brightened up when a customer walked in" and "he was like a ray of sunshine!" The event included laughter, jokes, and sharing stories demonstrating the program's success. Regardless of ability, every individual possesses unique talents and strengths waiting to be discovered. Through meaningful employment, individuals with disabilities find opportunities to showcase their skills and ignite the flame of hope, proving that any obstacle can be overcome with determination and support.
Both the Fogarty Center and The Salvation Army continue to share this commitment. As Major Lopes eloquently states, “All of us have an opportunity to be all that God has created us to be.” When asked if he would like to share some words after receiving his award Vincent stated it perfectly, “Ring the bell!” Thank you, Vincent, and all of the bell ringers from the Fogarty Center. You are truly The Salvation Army’s Dream Team!
