Take the $20 Challenge to Support Red Kettle Campaign

Dec 20, 2021

Northeast/Northwest Ohio (December 20th, 2021) – The Salvation Army is starting its final week of the iconic red kettle season. Today is December 20th, and The Salvation Army is launching the “$20 Challenge” at their in-person and online virtual kettles. The $20 Challenge encourages a bold gesture of kindness to help families in need this holiday season and during the year.

“The Salvation Army is asking community members to help hard-working families still struggling with pandemic poverty. A $20 donation can help us impact so many lives throughout Northeast and Northwest Ohio. Funds raised at the red kettles support year-round programming efforts at our local Corps Community Centers,” stated Major Cindy-Lou Drummond, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army of Northeast Ohio.

The Salvation Army Red Kettles have been in use since 1891 to assist those in need and is one of the longest-running and most recognizable campaigns. Currently, staffing and volunteer shortages are having a real impact on this year’s collection.  The Salvation Army of Northeast Ohio is asking those who are in a position to help to make a donation. “When our neighbors need food, help paying bills, or seek counsel to get them through a difficult time, The Salvation Army is here to help. We invite all Ohioans to support our red kettle effort and take the $20 Challenge. Help us continue to help others in need,” continued Drummond.

New for 2021, donors will also be able to give via PayPal and Venmo at the kettles simply by a “bump” or a scan of the QR code. “Expanding the contactless giving options at the kettles is a blessing. With less cash being carried, adding Venmo and PayPal will help us engage more individuals this holiday season,” said Major Drummond. The Salvation Army also continues to offer Apple Pay and Google Pay at the kettle stands nationwide.

Individuals can also donate from the comfort and safety of their homes by giving to a virtual red kettle at SalvationArmyOhio.org
