The Salvation Army of Northeast and Northwest Ohio Kick off National Donut Day

Jun 4, 2021

Cleveland, OH (June 4th, 2021) – The Salvation Army’s National Donut Day is inspired by the legacy of our donut lassies who served those fighting on the frontlines of World War I with sweetness and a smile.

Today, June 4th on National Donut Day, The Salvation Army of Northeast and Northwest Ohio is announcing a #DoGoodWithaDonut social media challenge in honor of our donut lassies and their kindness.

“We are asking everyone in our local communities to #DoGoodWithaDonut on National Donut Day and complete one random act of kindness on June 4th,” stated Major Cindy-Lou Drummond, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army of Northeast Ohio. “Buy a dozen donuts from Giant Eagle for $3.99 and deliver them to a frontline worker in your life, give a single donut to a friend, or coworker. Let’s make life a little sweeter and #DoGoodWithaDonut.”

Giant Eagle is supporting The Salvation Army efforts on National Donut Day for Advantage Card members purchasing a dozen donuts.

Those who wish to participate are asked to share their random actions of kindness on Facebook using the hashtag #DoGoodWithaDonut and The Salvation Army Northeast Ohio will share their posts.

National Donut Day was originally established to honor The Salvation Army’s work to serve soldiers in France during World War I. Nearly 250 volunteers traveled overseas to provided emotional and spiritual support, baked goods, clothes, and supplies to troops. The “Donut Lassies” fried donuts in small pan, in some cases a helmet, to boost morale of U.S. soldiers and are credited with popularizing the donut in the United State when the troops returned home from war.
