Family Caring Center

All proceeds from Runway RePurposed support The Family Caring Center, which is located in East Liberty and provides shelter and meals to families experiencing homelessness. It is also one of the few shelters in the Pittsburgh region that allows families to be together during their stay.

An on-site Social Worker develops a service plan with each family when they move in and meets weekly with them to monitor their progress. During these sessions, residents may receive counseling, assistance with budgeting or finances, and referrals to other community agencies that can assist in specific areas, all with the end goal of moving the families closer to self-sufficiency. Living in a shelter can be particularly tough on kids. To help kids through this stressful time, The Family Caring Center offers special activities such as homework help, field trips, and donated Christmas gifts.

Families can become homeless for all sorts of reasons.  Andrea felt an urgent need to move away from her community when her abuser was to be released from jail.  Without having an actual home to move to, though, she tried to make it work at a hotel but finally had to go to a shelter.  Though her children were concerned at first, the Family Caring Center lifted a big burden off her shoulders.  She says, “This facility allowed us to connect again… we became a family again.  We sang songs; we read; we laughed; we joked… Once we got here, my kids began to relax.”  She continues, “It’s not even about just the shelter they provide or the meals that they provide, but the resources were incredible.  If you work the plan, work the program, the benefits are long-term.”
