Salvation Army & Herr's provide 500 backpacks to help local students start the school year
For families already facing financial hardship, the cost of school supplies can add another challenge to the back-to-school season. This year, the price of a typical school supply list has increased 7.7% nationwide.
To help ease that burden, The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia and Herr's teamed up to help local students start the new school year prepared with the supplies they need.
Herr's provided 500 backpacks filled with school supplies for children and families served by the Philadelphia Tabernacle Corps Community Center. The backpacks were distributed during the Corps' Vacation Bible School graduation celebration, bringing families together to celebrate the end of summer and prepare for the school year ahead.
"Every child deserves to walk into school feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn," said Captain Benjamin Lyle, Area Commander for The Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia. "Providing these backpacks is one way we can help families with the cost of back-to-school essentials while making sure children can begin the year with dignity. We're incredibly grateful to Herr's for continuing to stand alongside The Salvation Army and the families we serve."
The event builds on a longstanding partnership between Herr's and The Salvation Army. As Herr's celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, the company continues to support Salvation Army programs and community initiatives throughout the region.
Through partnerships like this one, The Salvation Army works year-round to help Greater Philadelphia families meet immediate needs while connecting them with resources and support in their communities.
