Why Summer Camp Matters

Summer at camp is not just about canoes and cabins, it's about being seen, safe, and loved. And it all starts with you.

For many children in tough circumstances, summer isn't a break, it's a burden. But when a child steps off the bus at a Salvation Army camp, that burden lifts.

In that one week, they laugh. They make friends who understand them. They sleep safely. They eat three meals without worry. It's at camp where children are surrounded by voices reminding them:

“You matter. You belong. God loves you.”

“I signed up myself.”

Brooklynn, age 14, didn't wait for anyone else. Living in foster care, she saw a flyer for The Salvation Army’s camp and took the chance. What she found was not just fun, but healing.

She reconnected with a classmate she once fought with. She stayed a second week. She started meeting with a Salvation Army Staff member back home, and got her first Bible-with it she discovered more than faith, she discovered structure, purpose, and the joy of serving others.

Today, she's dreaming of photography, journalism, or justice. Futures that might grow from college, vocational training, or hands-on experience.

And it all started with a week at camp. A week someone just like you gave her.
