Join the Red Kettle Tradition

Your generosity keeps a century-old tradition alive and helps families in need today and all year long.

A Tradition of Giving

The iconic Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign began in 1891 when Captain Joseph McFee, inspired by charitable iron pots he’d seen as a sailor in Liverpool, England, wanted to provide a community Christmas meal. He placed a kettle at the Oakland Ferry Landing in California where travelers could easily give. By 1897, kettles were being used nationwide and helped provide 150,000 Christmas dinners — a tradition that continues to this day.

When you give to the Red Kettle, you’re joining over 130 years of generosity and hope.

Your Impact Last Year

Thanks to donors like you, last year’s Red Kettle campaign raised $99,474,124 in the US alone. Every dollar made a difference:

  • Christmas gifts for children in need
  • Meals for families struggling to put food on the table
  • Shelter and utility assistance for those experiencing hardship

Your gift does so much more than brighten the holidays for an individual or family; it sustains essential services for over 27 million people every year.
