Evangeline booth Miracle Home
An emergency homeless shelter for women and their chilrden
Our Purpose and Mission
The Salvation Army Evangeline Booth Miracle Home is an emergency homeless shelter for women and their children. Serving women in the Capital Region without discrimination, the home is a full-service 18-bed shelter located in downtown Schenectady, close to services and on the bus lines. Rooms and meals are provided on a temporary basis until those who are experiencing homelessness due to financial and personal challenges can get back into a more permanent and secure housing situation.
The Evangeline Booth Miracle Home Strives To:
- Treat homeless women and children with dignity and respect while providing a safe home, filled with love, support, and faith
- Encourage the women to make positive life decisions and encourage them to acknowledge and value their self-worth
- Work to stop the cycle of poverty, abuse, and addiction
- Provide children with a safe, nurturing environment
- Follow and be guided by the mission statement of The Salvation Army: To preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination
History of Booth Home
The Booth Home was opened in 1985 when The Salvation Army jail ministry recognized that some women, just released from incarceration, had no place to go. From 1985 through 1987, the home was open to women only. In 1988, The Salvation Army, in response to local needs, expanded services to include single women and women with children. The Evangeline Booth Miracle Home is a four-story facility The first floor consists of the staff office and community spaces. Resident rooms are on the top three floors.
Evangeline Booth, the first woman General of The Salvation Army, motivated by faith devoted her life to selfless service to those in need.
