The Salvation Army in Northeast Ohio Celebrates National Donut Day
Cleveland, OH (June 7th, 2024) — National Donut Day, the world's sweetest holiday, was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army. This day not only serves as a delightful reason to visit your favorite local bakery but also stands as a testament to the bravery of The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies”. These courageous women stood shoulder to shoulder with soldiers on the front lines during World War I, providing them with a taste of home and a much-needed morale boost.
In 1917, The Salvation Army volunteers traveled to France and set up makeshift huts to provide soldiers with essential supplies, emotional and spiritual support, and freshly baked donuts. The sweet treat did more than raise spirits; it brought comfort and a taste of home to those who risked their lives.
Today, The Salvation Army continues to be a beacon of hope in our local communities. Their comprehensive programs and services, spanning spiritual, emotional, and financial care and support, make a significant difference in the lives of individuals and families in need. In Northeast Ohio, their presence is deeply felt, underscoring their unwavering commitment to their neighbors.
“Over the last 159 years, The Salvation Army has provided hope and help to those in need across the country as the nation’s largest private provider of social services,” said Major Edgar George, Jr., Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in Northeast Ohio. “Today, Donut Day is a tradition to celebrate the work of the original Donut Lassies by delivering donuts and emotional and spiritual care to those in need.”
This Friday, June 7th, The Salvation Army in Northeast Ohio will mark National Donut Day in a special way. In collaboration with Giant Eagle, they will pay tribute to the Donut Lassies' rich history by hosting a series of events in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Giant Eagle, in their generous spirit, will provide donuts for these events and sell them at their store locations for $6.00 a dozen, further spreading the joy of National Donut Day.
