Jun 1, 2023

Cleveland, OH (June 2nd, 2023) — This year marks the 85th anniversary and celebration of National Donut Day. Established in 1938 by The Salvation Army, National Donut Day is a great excuse to visit your favorite local bakery and a reminder of the bravery of The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” who joined soldiers’ on the front lines during World War I.

In 1917, The Salvation Army volunteers traveled to France and set up makeshift huts to provide soldiers with essential supplies, emotional and spiritual support, and freshly baked donuts. The sweet treat did more than raise spirits; it brought comfort and a taste of home to those who risked their lives.

Today, The Salvation Army continues serving on the front lines of our local communities by providing a wide range of programs and services to vulnerable individuals and families in need. In Northeast Ohio, The Salvation Army provides spiritual, emotional, and financial care and support to their neighbors in need.

“Over the last 85 years, The Salvation Army has provided hope and help to those in need across the country as the nation’s largest private provider of social services,” said Major Edgar George, Jr., Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in Northeast Ohio. “Today, Donut Day is a tradition to celebrate the work of the original Donut Lassies by delivering donuts and emotional and spiritual care to those in need.”

This Friday, June 2, in honor of National Donut Day, The Salvation Army in Northeast Ohio will celebrate this rich history of the Donut Lassies in partnership with Giant Eagle, who will be providing donuts are various events in Ohio and Pennsylvania to honor our veterans. Giant Eagle will also sell donuts at their store locations at $5.00 a dozen in promotion of National Donut Day.
