The Salvation Army Summit County Opens Post-Rehab Sober Living Program, Begin New

Sep 9, 2021

Akron, OH, September 9, 2021—The Salvation Army announces the opening of its new post-rehab sober living program, Begin New. A recovery mentoring and discipleship program, Begin New is designed to help ease the transition to home and society after drug or alcohol rehabilitation.

“The first steps after release from a treatment program are very difficult in recovery,” said Major Steven Stoops, Area Coordinator and Corps Officer. “All the stresses faced when an addict was using are waiting once rehab is completed. The Begin New sober living program provides a safe, stable opportunity to learn and grow in sobriety.”

Stoops explains that completing a treatment program is a major step on the path to recovery, but some of the toughest challenges occur after treatment is over. Begin New provides a safe, nurturing environment to help the recovering addict grow in sobriety, surrounded by caring mentors and peers who know just what the individual is going through.

“The Begin New program provides post-rehab structure and fellowship to assist men in recovery move forward with their development and become active, participating members of the workforce and social community—at their own pace,” says Salvation Army Commissioner and program developer/director Larry Bosh. “Among our goals are helping participants build life skills and spiritual life leading to self-confidence, self-reliance and self-sufficiency.”

Participants in Begin New will receive substantial support services, such as pastoral and addiction counseling, social work assessment and referral, life skill development, computer training, arts/music involvement and volunteer activity. If needed, housing is available at Booth Manor residence for up to six men actively involved in the Begin New program.
