Salvation Army Deploying for Florida
Portland, ME– The Salvation Army of Northern New England Division will be sending Major Jessica Irwin, from the Lewiston/Auburn Salvation Army to the Incident Command Post in Port Charlotte, Florida. She will relieve emergency workers for The Salvation Army that have been assisting hundreds of Floridians affected by Hurricane Ian. Major Irwin will provide emotional and spiritual care.
Major Jessica is trained in incident management, mobile unit operations (food prep and serving), Emotional and Spiritual Care, and Basic First Aid.
Her most recent deployment was to Norristown, PA in 2021 to help those affected by Hurricane Ida.
Hurricane Ian:
The Salvation Army is considering their response to Hurricane Ian to be one of the largest disaster relief operations in recent history – comparable to Hurricane Michael.
- Services provided so far:
- 50,207 meals, food boxes, & snacks
- 35,338 drinks
- 1,786 emotional and spiritual care contacts
- 193 cases of water
- 69 infant supplies
- 34 personal hygiene kits
- 15 clean-up kits
- Over 70 mobile feeding units have been deployed in Florida's surrounding states with more than 38 deployed into the Fort Myers, Port Charlotte, and Naples areas to serve the local communities.
- Each one of these feeding units can feed 500-1,500 people per day.
- A caravan rom Texas carrying 16,000 shelf-stable meals, a strike force of 11 mobile feeding units, and a Texas Baptist field kitchen has arrived in Fort Myers, FL to provide ongoing support in the aftermath of the storm.
