Matthew 14: 22-33
v31 – Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
The disciples were asked by Jesus to get into a boat and row across the water. There was much anguish when they saw a figure (silhouette) in the distance walking on the sea. After realizing it was Jesus they started to relax. Peter even volunteered to walk on water to meet Him (v29-30).
Initially his faith was strong and knew he could go the distance. However, when the storm hit and the wind became strong, he turned his eyes away and went under. Jesus who immediately realized what had happened, reached out to Peter, pulling him up and immediately saying, “You of little faith”.
Doubting our faith and turning our eyes away from God is natural to many. When we go through lives storms and can only see darkness for the future, we tend to think the best way is to go it alone. The resultant of this is, we suffer anxiety, we panic, we go under like Peter did.
If we could look back at the history of our life, we will see only one pair of foot prints in the sand during these times. Jesus was with us all the time but carrying us.
We need to constantly fix our eyes on God and keep our faith strong. One way we constantly see God is by seeing His works on earth. When we see something amazing e.g. landscape, an amazing view, we should think of the phrase, “God scored a goal”. During a sports match, when a goal is scored the fans immediately as one gives a loud cheer. We should constantly cheer for Him knowing he can also get us through the difficult times. We should constantly walk by faith.
Lord I believe, help my unbelief.
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace
