NBC 10 Thanksgiving Telethon to Support Salvation Army’s
Feeding Program in Rhode Island

RHODE ISLAND – NBC 10 WJAR will once again host the 10 Cares Thanksgiving Telethon to support The Salvation Army on Thursday, November 10th. Proceeds from the telethon will be used to support The Salvation Army’s feeding program. Shaw’s supermarket is the Title Sponsor and has been supporting the telethon for 17 years. The Salvation Army plans to hand out thousands of food baskets with all the trimmings for a perfect Thanksgiving Dinner again this year. Over the last 27 years, the telethon raised more than $1.3 million.

“This has been another challenging year for many families in Rhode Island,” said WJAR-TV NBC10’s Vic Vetters, Vice President and General Manager. “We hope our annual telethon will be a successful way for people to donate to make Thanksgiving better for the needy.”

Thousands of people turn to The Salvation Army in Rhode Island, to provide for the nutritional needs of their families. This campaign helps to raise much-needed funds to meet the needs that are so prevalent.

SPONSORS:
Title Sponsor – Shaw’s
Matching Sponsors – Coastal 1 Credit Union, Tasca, Friend of The Salvation Army

“There is no greater expression of Thanksgiving than a community reaching out to meet the needs of their fellow citizens,” said Major Roger Duperree, Divisional Secretary for the Rhode Island State Command of The Salvation Army’s Southern New England Division. “The collective good that is done as NBC 10, Shaw’s Supermarkets and The Salvation Army, join with caring people from across this region is awe inspiring. Each one of us truly becomes something bigger when we stand together.”

As The Salvation Army is preparing for the upcoming holiday season and winter months, its anticipating increased need for food. Inflation has severely impacted families in Rhode Island and the struggle to keep food on the table has continued to be challenging. One in four households in Rhode Island are food insecure – meaning they are often unsure of where their next meal will come.

Although this is targeted as a Thanksgiving food program, it helps to keep The Salvation Army’s food pantries stocked into the following year. In Rhode Island, The Salvation Army offers programs for seniors, veterans, individuals and families to address hunger throughout Rhode Island.

Additionally, The Salvation Army offers financial assistance to families in financial crisis to provide short term support, while helping individuals work toward long term self-sufficiency. Some of the assistance provided to low-income families includes food, rental assistance, clothing, funds for paying utility and heating bills, and seasonal programs. For those faced with an eviction, The Salvation Army helps with emergency rental assistance and helps pay utility bills in order to get through an emergency crisis.

Last year, The Salvation Army provided 358,283 meals throughout Rhode Island and Fall River, Attleboro, and New Bedford, MA areas.

Food insecurity leads to:
Serious health complications
Damage to a child’s ability to learn and grow
Difficult decisions for seniors – often living on fixed incomes – such as choosing between paying for food and paying for critical healthcare

A donation of any amount will help meet the need this Thanksgiving, but please consider the suggested contributions below.

1 Small Food Box - $30
1 Medium Food Box - $60
1 Large Food Box - $90

Nonperishable food items can be dropped off at participating Shaw’s supermarkets in Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts from November 4th to November 29th. Look for the marked bins. The Salvation Army will sort and distribute the food to families.

For those that need assistance, please call your local Salvation Army.
