Shieldy Visits WFSB's Scot Haney for National Salvation Army Week

May 16, 2023

CONNECTICUT – National Salvation Army Week is May 15th – 21st this year and serves as an opportunity to celebrate our volunteers, donors and program beneficiaries who have enabled us to serve in the United States since 1880. This week is observed immediately following Mother's Day in May and was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 – 74 years after The Salvation Army arrived in the U.S.

In his speech, President Eisenhower noted, “Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness, and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”

This year for Salvation Army Week our mascot, Shieldy, will be taking a tour of Connecticut to thank all of our community partners that help us Do the Most Good throughout the entire year!

“The Salvation Army is synonymous with Christmas, but our love extends far beyond the Christmas season,” said Major Debra Ashcraft, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army’s Southern New England Division. “With The Salvation Army, your love lasts all year long and endures in every community across Connecticut and Rhode Island.”
