Providing physical needs such as grocery, utility and gift assistance,
to emotional experiences including holiday events and traditions.
In December 2019 The Salvation Army in Marietta distributed more than 1,800 toys and 1,350 items of clothing to 178 Washington County children. 93 baskets including a holiday meal were also given to their families. This year, we are expecting the need for this assistance to be higher than it ever has been.
Christmas is a time when we joyfully celebrate God's gift to the world, Jesus Christ His Son. Unfortunately, for many families, it is also a time when they are reminded of how little they have. We work tirelessly to make sure that every child brought to us in the holiday season feels the true spirit of Christmas.
The holidays bring added financial and emotional stress to families and individuals living in poverty. From gifts for children in need to special meals for those who would otherwise go without fellowship on the holidays and meeting other basic needs - we aim to bring joy back into the season.
Parents bring their children's "wish lists" and we print them on tags. Donors, the "Angels," then take the tag, shop for the child, and bring the gifts to our office for anonymous distribution to the families at Christmas. We're seeing increased demand for this program this year, which is being helped with the support of the Marietta Community Foundation. If you would like information about how you can help with the Angel Tree, call us at 740-373-4043 or send us an e-mail.
All the supplies necessary to gather around the family table for a Christmas turkey dinner. These are available each year to Washington County residents in need with no restrictions on age.
Giving everyone, young and old, a place to celebrate with others is a simple thing that goes a long way toward helping people during the holidays.
As part of our Angel Tree and Toy Shop programs, kids will have the opportunity to receive articles of clothing that they need along with their other gifts.
Red Kettle Campaign
While this program operates primarily as a fundraiser, it also serves as a two-way ministry, offering temporary seasonal employment to several individuals in Washington County. For many, the ringing of the bell signifies the start of the Christmas season. This campaign funds all of our programs all year round, not just at Christmas. In 2020, our goal is to raise $55,535. If you'd like to volunteer to ring the bell, click here to sign up.
