Our Doors are open

Each year, The Salvation Army provides over 10 million nights of shelter to those in need around the world.

Cold Weather Shelter Saves Lives

In the 2019-2020 winter season, we provided 97 nights of shelter in emergent cold weather to those who would otherwise be on the streets overnight. The average low temperature on nights we offered this service was just 26 degrees. This program is made possible by grants from the Sisters Health Foundation, the Marietta Community Foundation, and the Emergency Food and Shelter Program through Washington/Morgan County Community Action.

Everyone deserves a safe place

Steven came to us in the winter of 2019 on a particularly cold night. As we worked with him on a transitional plan, he shared that his criminal history made him ineligible for most shelter programs. Working together, we were able to advocate on his behalf and find a shelter in another city willing to work with him. We provided the transportation he needed to get there. A few months later, we were overjoyed to hear that Steven had successfully transitioned into an apartment of his own.

How we help provide housing

Our SleepSAfe program can provide a limited term stay in a local motel on nights when the forecasted low temperature is below freezing. Participants in this program are required to work with our employees on a longer term plan, whether that means applying for permanent housing, securing a spot in a local shelter, or reaching out to friends or family for a place to stay after leaving the motel. Consideration will also be given to individuals in short term periods of personal emergency on warmer nights after preparing a similar transition plan with respect to their immediate situation.
