Too many children feel the pain of hunger

Through food pantries and feeding programs, we address the national food insecurity crisis by providing nutritious meals to anyone in need.

The Salvation Army feeds 300,000 meals and provides 145,000 bags of groceries yearly in Western PA

Anyone in need of a nutritious meal can find one at The Salvation Army. Our holistic approach to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each person helps move many from crisis to empowerment.

Each night in the United States, 17.4 million families go to bed hungry

An additional 6.9 million families live on the verge of food insecurity. That means they don’t always know where their next meal is coming from.

Programs

Food Pantries

By supplying free fresh produce, canned goods, and healthy frozen items, our food pantries provide valuable meal supplementation while helping those in need maintain their independence and dignity. These food pantries are especially crucial in “food deserts,” where entire communities experience food insecurity due to lack of grocery store access.

Meal Programs

From sit-down programs that provide nutritious hot meals and valuable human interaction, to mobile meals delivering sustenance to those who cannot reach a food distribution center, to weekly grocery bags and choice food pantries, we help the most vulnerable members of society escape the daily burdens of food insecurity.

Feeding Families for Life

The Salvation Army wants to change the traditional way we think about feeding the hungry, which is why we launched a campaign across all 28 counties we serve in Western Pennsylvania to fight hunger the healthy way. The goal is to develop a sustainable ongoing program that supports the expansion of healthy eating programs.

With your support, we can:

  • Expand our "Love in a Backpack" program to send more children home with healthy food options over the weekend.
  • Enhance the meals we serve to include healthy & fresh choices.
  • Purchase fresh produce for our salad bars to make meals we serve at our soup kitchens much healthier.
  • Educate our clients about nutrition and food preparation.
  • Implement our healthy eating program for over 1,700 children at Camp Allegheny.
