According to the USDA, more than 38 million people in the United States are food insecure. The pandemic has increased food insecurity among families with children, with nearly 12 million children facing hunger.
Emergency Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens, and other feeding initiatives are offered through our Corps Community Centers to help those facing food insecurity for themselves and their families.
Our local programs, which aim to address and end food insecurity, are listed below.
Bread to Bread
We offer our Bread to Bread program, which is a walk-in food assistance service open to all, every Thursday from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM. This community event starts with a brief optional devotional before participants are provided with bread, prepared meals, and sandwiches to take home. When possible, participants are also given fresh produce and canned goods. This program is imperative to our mission to combat hunger while providing fellowship opportunities within The Salvation Army.
Bread and Blessings
At The Salvation Army, we strive to combat hunger and address food insecurity. Our Bread and Blessings program, offered on Fridays from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, is one step of many that we have taken here at Coatesville to work towards eliminating hunger. We offer a hot and healthy lunch for all who attend this community event.
Super Cupboard
Super Cupboard is a collaborative food education program with PENN State Nutrition Links and The Salvation Army. Participants are given a variety of healthy cooking lessons designed to teach them how to make delicious, practical and cost effective meals. Every participant goes home with all the ingredients to prepare the same meal for their family for free. Currently, there are two separate programs offered, one in English and one in Spanish, each in 8-week sessions.
