87 Years of Sweet Service: Donut Day at the Capitol

Jun 24, 2025

When some people see a donut, they only see a delicious treat. At The Salvation Army, it’s not only a delicious treat, but a treat with a rich Salvation Army history.

In 1917, The Salvation Army sent women volunteers, known as the "Donut Lassies," to France to support American soldiers during World War I. In 1938, The Salvation Army established Donut Day as a fundraiser to help individuals in need during the Great Depression and to honor the service of these brave women.

Eighty-seven years later, The Salvation Army Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Division celebrated this milestone again by hosting Donut Day at the State Capitol Building in Harrisburg. Our Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team distributed free coffee and donuts from an EDS vehicle, also known as a canteen, stationed behind the Capitol at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and North Street.

Salvation Army staff and volunteers also delivered donuts by visiting legislative offices to thank elected officials and staff for their partnership and support. An indoor engagement table was set up near the Capitol cafeteria to share materials and invite guests to stop by the canteen.

“We’re serving donuts and coffee to legislators and staff as a simple way to connect and share what The Salvation Army offers in communities across Pennsylvania,” added Capt. Joseph Smith, Corps Officer for The Salvation Army Carlisle Corps.

In total, 600 donuts were distributed to Capitol legislators and staff to enjoy. The engagement table in the Capitol’s East Wing also offered flyers, EDS brochures, magnets and other resources highlighting the organization’s services.
