Pendel Music & Arts Spotlight: Caleb Childs from the Harrisburg Capital City Region

Nov 4, 2024

As a son of Salvation Army Officer parents, Caleb has moved around many times in his life, joining his family in ministry in various locations around the United States. He currently studies Music Education at Messiah University in Pennsylvania, and we are thrilled to have him in our Eastern Pennsylvania & Delaware (Pendel) Division Music & Arts Department.

This summer, Caleb served as the media specialist at Camp Ladore. He brought back the Daily Camper Videos: short, beloved video segments highlighting the day’s events. He also worked closely on the Jesus Theatre project at camp, serving as assistant director and as a lighting and projection designer. Jesus Theatre is a theatre piece that is performed by staff each week at camp, as a way of bringing the story of Jesus to children in a way that they can relate to and understand. Performing in front of more than 1,200 children over the summer, this ministry is one of the biggest parts of the Summer Camp experience.

As a musician, Caleb is a talented singer and bass trombonist, and he performs in both Pendel Brass and Pendel Singers, two elite divisional ensembles. While at Star Lake Musicamp this summer, he was selected for the Music Leadership track, receiving expert teaching on improving and developing his leadership skills.

“Caleb continues to worship through music and arts here in The Salvation Army and give back to his local community by teaching the next generation of musicians,” said Divisional Music & Creative Arts Director Edward Mylechreest. We are so proud of this wonderful young man.”

The Pendel Music & Arts Department is dedicated to sharing the teachings of Jesus Christ through the ministry of music and the arts and encourages all to do so, through whatever art form they choose. Pendel Music & Arts offers free music and arts education for children and adults throughout the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware region. The department runs three levels of teaching: prep academy (age 7-12), youth Groups (age 12-18), and senior ensembles and lessons in brass, dance, drama, percussion, and singing. Pendel Music & Arts leads the Ladore Music and Arts Camp and our Junior and Senior Conservatories during the summer for intensive music and arts training.

The Pendel Music & Arts Department exists to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, through the ministry of Music and the Arts. We believe that all are called to worship the Father, and so we strive to encourage all to do so, through whatever art form they choose.

We serve the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware region, without discrimination and throughout the year, we offer free music and arts education for children and adults throughout the region.

On a divisional scale, we run three levels of teaching: Prep Academy (Age 7-12), Youth Groups (Age 12-18), and Senior Ensembles. We offer lessons in Brass, Dance, Drama, Percussion, and Singing.

Our senior ensembles, Pendel Brass and Pendel Singers, are world-renowned performing ensembles, with a great history of professional recordings and multiple national and international tours.

We lead the Ladore Music and Arts Camp, as well as our own Junior and Senior Conservatories during the Summer, for intensive music and arts training. In addition to this, we support all forms of corporate worship throughout our division, on both a local corps and divisional scale.
