The Salvation Army is one of the largest providers of services to the LGBTQ community. We offer support information, programs and resources to serve individual needs. We hire staff who understand and advocate for the people we serve.

Homeless Shelters

Our homeless shelters and emergency family services are available to anyone in need, according to their need and our capacity to help. Almost one-third of transgender people have been rejected from an emergency shelter. This is why The Salvation Army creates a safe, inclusive dormitories with services provided for any unique needs.

Help with Substance Abuse

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, LGBTQ+ adults are more likely than their straight counterparts to abuse substances. The Salvation Army recognizes the need for all people, regardless of income, to have access to rehabilitation programs. Our LGBTQ-friendly programs provide housing, food, counseling, community, and employment as we work to treat the symptoms and, ultimately, the root causes of prolonged alcohol and drug dependence.

Teenage Suicide Prevention

LGBTQ+ youth contemplate suicide at almost three times the rate of heterosexual youth. We’re committed to providing spiritual and emotional care to those in need regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Our downtown Rochester location on Liberty Pole Way provides walk-in services that include mental support referrals, emergency services - and most importantly - hope and understanding. No one should ever feel alone or that self-harm is their only option.

Food Insecurity

More than a quarter of LGBTQ+ Americans are food insecure and rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). As one of the nation's largest providers of social services, we understand the importance of helping people maintain their dignity when looking for nutritious food by providing options.

Job Training and Equal Opportunities

Despite progress toward hiring equality, nearly one-quarter (23.7%) of LGBT Americans have experienced employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Almost half (45.5%) of LGBT workers have experienced, at some point in their careers, some form of unfair treatment at work, including harassment, being fired, or facing hiring discrimination based on their LGBT status. The Salvation Army offers educational resources, counseling services, and vocational training to help obtain well-paying jobs. Through our programs we help individuals cultivate vital life skills needed for successful and stable careers.

The Salvation Army services provided here in Rochester are equally available to anyone.

Any person (and sometimes even pets!) who walk through our doors will receive assistance. We base services on need and our capacity to help.

Healthcare providers are on hand daily. Conversations with them can include hormone therapy and gender affirming surgery.

Our staff is trained to meet needs regardless of a person’s orientation or beliefs. To best support unique needs of individuals who are homeless, we may ask which shelter they would prefer placement. We absolutely accept people who are transgender in our Rochester, NY shelters and emergency family service units. Our goal is to provide space where everyone can feel safe and cared for.

Tours of our locations are available – come see our inclusive sleeping and bathing spaces, the designated rooms for transgender guests, and case managers who collaborate with partners such as The Center For Youth, Trillium, and Mocha to help us in our journey of inclusion.
