The Salvation Army is committed to serving all families and children, including those with disabilities, by offering enrichment services that help children develop, learn and achieve success.
Our services provide:
EARLY HEAD START COLLABORATIVE
The Salvation Army, in partnership with Atonement Child Care Center and Family Based Child Care, provides Early Head Start services to nearly one hundred infants, toddlers and their families. Each child will have the opportunity to participate in an Early Head Start program until reaching his or her third birthday, while attending a New York State licensed child care center or family care provider. At the age of three, children will transition to Head Start and /or Universal Pre-Kindergarten. This collaborative program will include the following enrichment services:
EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS
The Salvation Army is very proud to join many other partners in Central New York to support early learning. We are working locally to implement the National Grade Level Reading Campaign, assuring all children reach grade level reading by the third grade. We are actively involved with the Early Education Alliance and The Literacy Coalition, which supports the Dolly Parton “Imagination Library,” that provides children and their families with a new book each month.
The Salvation Army collaborates with the Syracuse City School District by offering full time, enriched Universal Pre-Kindergarten instruction to all four year olds in our Cab Horse Commons Child Care Center. Cab Horse Commons also offers Head Start programming to three and four year olds through a collaboration with PEACE, Inc.
THE BENEFITS OF EARLY HEAD START
Early education is viewed as the foundation for childhood development. Social and emotional skills are learned, strengthened and considered as basic building blocks that begin to take shape while children are very young through play and with others. Research shows that 90% of a child's brain development occurs by 3 years of age and children who have access to health resources and early learning opportunities exhibit school readiness skills by age 5. This program supports children's development of secure attachment with peers and adults.
Infants and toddlers in our Day Care Facilities and the Early Head Start program receive high quality care in a supportive learning environment for both children and families. Teachers help in developing and refining skills to meet developmental milestones with assessments and individualized child planning. The continuity of care through our facilities allow stable and uninterrupted support to families and children. Funding support is available for those eligible.
