We combat natural disasters with acts of God

Disasters of incredible magnitude call for people of incredible generosity.

When disaster strikes, The Salvation Army is often among the first to arrive and the last to leave.

Because we’re already part of so many New Jersey communities, our staff and volunteers are there to support their neighbors for as long as it takes—whether weeks, months, or years. Beyond large-scale disasters, we also respond year-round to local emergencies like house fires, offering care to survivors and first responders alike.

Natural disasters cost the U.S. billions yearly.

Devastating hurricanes, wildfires, extreme flooding, and tornadoes destroy more than homes – they break spirits and hearts. We are constantly working to provide physical, financial, and spiritual relief to those affected by both natural and manmade disasters.

Become a Specially-Trained Disaster Volunteer

We need people like you, ready and willing to help at any moment, to join our team. No special skills or education are required to get started, only a willingness to learn and a heart to serve others.

The Salvation Army’s EDS program has the following critical functions:

Emergency Preparedness
As a federally-recognized disaster relief organization, The Salvation Army understands the critical importance of being prepared for disasters of all types. Through training, exercising, careful planning, and strategic partnerships, The Salvation Army ensures its workforce is able to response quickly and effectively to disasters, as well as assisting the communities we serve in preparing themselves.
Emergency Response
The Salvation Army is capable of responding to emergency situations on short notice, in collaboration with local, state, and federal partners in emergency management. Our response services include emergency feeding, hydration, supply distribution, donations management, emotional and spiritual care, and more. We provide many of these supports through the backbone of our Emergency Disaster Services program – the mobile canteen.
Long-Term Disaster Recovery
In the weeks, months, and often years following a major disaster, The Salvation Army coordinates with government and non-profit partners to ensure survivors’ needs are sufficiently met. Long-term recovery services may include intensive case management, repair or rebuilding assistance, relocation assistance, financial assistance for replacement of belongings, and more.
