Volunteer with Service Extension

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Salvation Army Service Extension volunteer. Our volunteers receive specialized training to prepare them to utilize their talents throughout various communities. Individuals or committees may volunteer in different capacities. Depending on their availability, volunteers may provide emergency assistance and/or seasonal assistance as well.

Service Unit Representative (Year-Round Position)

As a Service Unit Representative, you may be able to provide emergency clothing, food, furniture, rental/mortgage, shelter/lodging, and utilities assistance for people in various communities.

Seasonal Service Extension Volunteer

As a Seasonal Service Extension Volunteer, you may be able to provide individuals and families with seasonal assistance such as recruiting campers to Camp Tecumseh, our overnight youth and senior camp; organizing a back-to-school supplies initiative; and leading Christmas gift initiatives for families.

Red Kettle Campaign:
Kettle Manager

The Kettle Manager’s primary responsibilities include the recruitment of volunteers to stand kettles, coordinate the scheduling of kettle volunteers and kettle workers, set up and take down kettle stands, driving, counting funds raised and supporting the Regional Manager and their staff.

Red Kettle Campaign:
Bell Ringer

The Bell Ringer is responsible for ringing bells at assigned locations as part of The Salvation Army’s Christmas fundraising efforts. Offering flexibility and an opportunity to serve in local communities.

Our Service Unit Representatives assist approximately 30,000 New Jersey residents annually.

Volunteer Stories

Our volunteers provide hope to individuals and families who find themselves in difficult situations. They are the boots-on-the ground, army behind the Army, who are activated in “Doing the Most Good”. They receive calls from those who have a wide range of needs. Here are some of the stories of volunteers who have responded in their communities during…

An Unexpected Flood

When an apartment complex flooded out and the tenants lost everything on the first floor and they didn't know where to turn, we were able to help them obtain the necessary furniture and food. It is always a good feeling when you help those in need where it does ‘the Most Good’.

COVID-19 Uncertainties

One family lost significant income due to COVID-19 with a baby and teen in the home. Our Service Unit provided ShopRite gift cards to help the family purchase food that met the dietary restrictions of the youngest, cleaning supplies, and baby items.

A Need for Shelter

I had a client who was homeless and in need of shelter. After placing the client at a motel with The Salvation Army funding and with the partnership of the other agency, she was able to move into her very own place. This was such a great feeling to know that one more person was able to overcome homelessness.

Utility Instability

My favorite memory is when a woman came in with all her medical papers and utility shut off notice. We gathered all her information for the application form, then we took time to pray together. She was so grateful for the prayer, perhaps even more so than the financial help, although that was what brought her in the door.
