A safe space for kids to play, learn, and build lifelong skills.

Healthy minds and healthy bodies are both crucial elements of youth development. The Salvation Army’s no-fee and low cost athletic programs offer children from low-income neighborhoods a chance to play sports, learn new skills, and cultivate healthy relationships with friends.

The Newark Westside basketball program is one of the fastest growing basketball programs in the city of Newark – creating a safe space for children ages 6-18 to develop their basketball skills, make new friends, and learn life lessons including determination, teamwork, and commitment. Children in the program receive to top-tier basketball instruction and have access to training, tournaments, equipment, and facilities that their families would otherwise not be able to afford. Our student-athletes also receive valuable tutoring sessions and homework assistance through the Books and Basketball program which helps students thrive in the classroom.

Click the sections below to learn more about each of our programs.

The Books and Basketball program provides a safe environment where young people in Newark can receive help on the court and in the classroom. Children that are enrolled are given one hour to work on homework with tutors and one hour for basketball practice. The program is for ages 13 and under.

The in-house league is a developmental league for beginner and intermediate players. This program focuses on skill development through weekly practices and games at our Newark Westside basketball court.

We currently have one local basketball team for children who demonstrate higher skills and would like to develop their game even further. The team competes with other programs throughout Newark.

The travel teams are made up of 7-12th grade students that travel outside of Newark to compete with other programs.

"It means a lot to be able to know you can go somewhere after school and be safe and work on your craft. They don't kick you out. You want to come here and work on your craft, they will always let you. They will always motivate you to do more. They don't want you to settle." Jamir W., Newark Westside basketball player
