Smiles Make the Greatest Gifts

Providing physical needs such as grocery, utility and gift assistance,
to emotional experiences including holiday events and traditions.

Every year, parents must choose between giving their children gifts or paying bills. Individuals facing poverty often spend the holidays without the warmth of a shared meal or even a support system.

The holidays bring added financial and emotional stress to families and individuals living in poverty. From gifts for children in need to special meals for those who would otherwise go without fellowship on the holidays and meeting other basic needs - we aim to bring joy back into the season.

The Salvation Army helps make
spirits brighter at Christmas through:

Children's Tree, Angel Tree, Toy Shop or Toy Town

Every year beginning with the amazing Rolling Thunder Toy Run the first Sunday in November, we have Christmas on our minds! Working with several other organizations throughout Licking County, The Salvation Army acts as a clearing house for families in need. Our “Christmas Cheer,” application process usually begins in mid-October where give hope to hundreds of families and thousands of children every year at Christmas. Distribution is coordinated by the Corps Officers at the Newark, Ohio Corps.

Thanksgiving and Christmas hot meals or food baskets

The Salvation Army helps bring people together for the holiday by providing everything needed for a traditional Thanksgiving at our center where hundreds gather. Warm winter coats, hats, gloves, and scarves are given out to adults at this time.

Holiday parties for youth or older adults

Giving everyone, young and old, a place to celebrate with others is a simple thing that goes a long way toward helping people during the holidays. All of our programs celebrate the holidays. Our Community Cares Ministry also delivers gifts and smiles to over 1,000 local nursing home residents for Christmas and Easter.

Coats and winter gear for youth and adults

Our Salvation Army location works with local community organizations and business to collect coats, hats, scarves, and gloves for children and youth. Our Coats for Kids drive usually begins in October, and we attempt to distribute as many items as possible when clients come in to fill out Christmas Cheer applications. We continue to provide the public with warm coats, hats, scarves, gloves, mittens, and blankets throughout the winter season in our Soup Kitchen.
