New London Children Receive New School Shoes

Aug 26, 2021

NEW LONDON, CT – Children from The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of New London did some back-to-school shopping at Adidas at Clinton Premium Outlets for new socks and shoes on Wednesday, August 25th. Adidas provided Adidas face masks for the children.

Approximately forty children from the club were able to have this experience through the generosity of donors. “The children had a wonderful time and were really excited shopping for new shoes,” said Captain Brandon Gonzalez-Corttrell from The Salvation Army in New London. “I think they will have a real sense of self confidence going to school on their first day. It’s a great opportunity for the kids to express themselves with so many colors and styles to choose from.” Kaydence, who is going into 10th grade, was excited to pick out a new pair of shoes. “I’m looking for black or pink sneakers,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to going back to school.”

Yudis, whose child is 11 years old, enrolled her daughter into The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of New London a few months into the pandemic. “We were at home basically by ourselves,” Yudis said. “My daughter was able to go into virtual meetings, meet new kids and make new friends.” Activity kits were sent to families, and the children were able to complete them together while meeting online. She was happy to be with her daughter to pick out new shoes. With such a long list of items needed for school, parents were relieved to check shoes off the list. “It’s a great help. I’ve been looking at sales but haven’t purchased anything yet.”

Edward, who is going into 3rd grade, was looking for a new pair of Adidas. “I want to find a black and white pair,” he said. Doris, Edward’s mother, was very happy her son was receiving a new pair of sneakers. “We usually don’t get this kind of help where we are from,” she said. “I am very grateful for the help.” Her son enjoys going to The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of New London. “He likes to interact with friends instead of being home all the time,” Doris said.
