Homeless Services

Our Shelters

The Salvation Army's Southern New England Division operates three shelters that serve people who are homeless. Shelter guests are provided with comprehensive services, including: emergency housing, nutritious meals, case management, and assistance with job searches. Shelter staff work to help guests prepare to move to permanent housing. Such preparation includes securing an income, applying for benefits, applying for assistance for first month's rent or a security deposit, as well as finding suitable accommodations that will allow guests to transition back into the community successfully. Each shelter provides unique services, with the Marshall House Family Shelter and Waterbury Family Emergency Shelter catering to single women and families and the New Britain Men's Shelter serving men.

The Salvation Army receives funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide services for unsheltered and near-homeless individuals and families. A requirement of this funding is that The Salvation Army participate in the Connecticut Homeless Management Information Network, which collects basic information about individuals and families receiving services from us. This requirement enables providers to get an accurate count of individuals and families who are unsheltered and to identify the need for different services.

We only collect information that is considered appropriate to getting people permanently and stably housed.  The collection and use of all personal information is guided by strict standards of confidentiality.  A copy of our Privacy Notice describing our privacy practice is available to all consumers upon request.

Any individual/family served has the ability to share their personal information with other area agencies that participate in the network by completing a Release of Information Form.  This Release will allow participating agencies to work in a cooperative manner to provide you with efficient and effective services. Conversely, individuals/families may elect to limit the sharing of personal information by indicating any preferred limitations in the Release of Information Form.
