Our Neighbors Are Struggling. You Can Help.

HOPE ON MAIN will bring together community businesses, foundations, and private donors like you to accomplish this important renovation and expansion to better help our struggling neighbors.

Your support of this effort will help give dignity and hope to our neighbors. More importantly, partners like you will help break the cycle of generational poverty.

Make Your Gift

If you’re interested in making a pledge to HOPE ON MAIN please print this FORM, fill it out and either email to laura.genco@use.salvationarmy.org or mail to: The Salvation Army – HOPE ON MAIN Office, 960 Main St., Buffalo, NY 14202.

Will You Join Us?

Any number of circumstances—a job loss, a tragic accident, a house fire, or a devastating diagnosis—can put a person out on the streets. It can be difficult for people to ask for help, but when they do, they need a place where they can find hope—a place to imagine a better future.

Your partnership in HOPE ON MAIN is essential. Please, prayerfully consider the investment you will make to help rebuild the lives of struggling families in our community. We’d like to hear from you as soon as possible.

The Need is Now

Vulnerable people can be anyone. Some are veterans, and some are employed. Some are escaping abuse. Increasingly, teens and young families are living on the margins.

Over 50% of Buffalonians pay above the suggested maximum 30% of household income for housing, and the amount of people who can no longer afford housing continues to grow.

The single most pressing need within the city is affordable housing options for families and individuals. And the need is growing.

Thank you for your compassion and your faithful support of our neighbors.

Your investment will help us meet the needs of the vulnerable today and help them rebuild better lives for the future.

New Emergency Family Shelter

The new family shelter will provide private living units that can house families, including those with teen boys and single fathers. Instead of the heart-wrenching practice of splitting up families, every family can have its own private space, which will restore dignity while they are going through crisis. This shelter will dramatically improve our overall continuum of care for vulnerable people and provide the supportive environment that helps families get off the streets and back on their feet.

Affordable Housing on Main Street

Building affordable housing will create 140 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Our wrap- around services on the main floor will be available to all residents, and transportation is easily accessible from this location.

Affordable Townhomes

Constructing 17 townhomes will provide three-bedroom units on two floors for larger families. These units will provide affordable housing in Erie County as well as access to wrap-around services.

Expansion of our East Buffalo family support by adding a Community Center

The East Buffalo Salvation Army Church and Community Center will be home to a chapel and offices, an after-school learning program, a gymnasium, fitness center, food pantry and storage, kitchen and dining areas, and a music program. Local youth can come to the Community Center for help on homework or to participate in safe activities, such as basketball or volleyball, until it is time to go home.

A Shelter in the Storm

Kendra and her two sons came back to Buffalo after fleeing from severe domestic violence. Unable to stay with family, she found herself walking up Main Street with her children on a very cold, snowy day. Kendra, living with multiple sclerosis, walked with a cane. Everything they owned was on their backs. When she saw The Salvation Army sign, she came into our family shelter.

We gave them dry clothes, a room with a warm shower, and a hot meal. Kendra and her sons stayed a little over three weeks. Upon leaving for permanent housing, Kendra wrote,

“You provided a clean, safe, social environment for my family. I am truly grateful to have been able to obtain shelter in such a great and caring place. You not only provided housing for us, but also referrals and information to get us established. Many thanks to you all!”

Your generous support helps other struggling families like Kendra’s with assistance to get back on their feet. Your gift provides a chance to start again.
