The Salvation Army Supervised Visitation Program is housed within the main facility of The Salvation Army, located at 960 Main Street in Buffalo, New York.  Our location is accessible to a main bus route and train station. The program space has two private casework offices, a 1500 square foot play area, a private kitchen, private bathroom, an outdoor courtyard complete with a slide, play castle, picnic table and an artist mural of a jungle.  In 2019, The Salvation Army established a second visitation room for visits.  This allows both the Director of Supervised Visitation and Preventive Services Counselor to conduct visits at the same time.  The Director of Supervised Visitation’s office is equipped with a large, one-way viewing window and audio capabilities to monitor parent child interaction within the larger visiting room or kitchen. This feature allows for third party observation by ECDSS staff if requested.

On-Site Supervised Visitation, ECDSS PREVENTIVE SERVICES, The Supervised Visitation Program receives referrals from Erie County Department of Social Services for supervised visits between non-custodial parents and their children. The Salvation Army Supervised Visitation provides a safe, neutral, and high-quality access for non-custodial parents and their children to visit in a child-centered play environment, supervised by a trained therapist. The goal of a highly structured environment like the Supervised Visitation Program serve to protect children first and foremost from all types of potential abuse/neglect during their interaction with their non-custodial parent(s). Positive family interactions are stressed and encouraged through a series of guided interactions by the counselor and through additional mandated parenting classes at local agencies (Every Person Influences Children and others) where parents can practice the skills, they are learning in the supervised visitation environment.

Off-site Visitation provides a less restrictive environment whereby families in the program are given the opportunity to experience cultural and community-based family events to enhance the quality of the parent-child supervised visit. The Off-site component of the Supervised Visitation Program operates consistently on the weekend, with families receiving services and visiting for two hours at a community-based or culturally-based event, including places such as Buffalo Science Museum, Bison’s Baseball, Buffalo Zoo, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo Historical Society, bowling centers and miniature golf/arcades.

POST-ECDSS SUPERVISED VISITS provides visits after Erie County Department of Social Services’ oversight is finished and Erie County Family Court has developed new custody and visitation arrangements. These services are available at a flat rate charge and are available only to families who have successfully visited at The Salvation Army while under the auspices of Erie County Dept. of Social Services.
