'It is a calling': One weary couple feeds thousands a month at Passaic Salvation Army
From NorthJersey.com:
Sometime in the past few weeks, Passaic's Salvation Army Mission provided its 300,000th meal to a person in need. In February alone, 28,000 found sustenance there.
On Friday, there were cases of food stacked high in the basement, boxes and boxes of food for people to take home. The kitchen had huge pots of rice, fish sticks and stew waiting to be placed in carry-out containers.
Outside, take-home meals from Farmers Fridge, a prepared-food vending machine company, were arranged on tables.
What's missing was a troop of volunteers. In fact, on Friday, other than the homeless and working poor who stopped by to grab lunch, few people were in the mission.
