Salvation Army Providing Day-Long Schooltime Tutoring/Care

Aug 25, 2020

Akron, OH, August 25, 2020 –– The Salvation Army of Summit County opens its day-long schooltime program for children of working parents on September 14, 2020, providing quality day-long distance learning and tutoring for children enrolled in area schools.

“Working parents need options and peace of mind knowing their children will be well cared for and stay on task with their studies while they are on the job,” says Major Kathleen Stoops, Associate Area Coordinator and Corps Officer.  “Whatever area school the child is attending
we will help them login, work on assignments and complete school-related projects.  Our teachers will provide personal assistance and tutoring as necessary—plus a balanced breakfast, lunch and snack.”

The Salvation Army’s Learning Zone Out of School Time (OST) programming for school age children adapted its afterschool curriculum and timing to meet the current need of working families in the area. According to Sarah Bailey, The Salvation Army’s director of OST programs, the arts and exercise will be included in the day as the child’s class schedule permits.  “Creativity and play are an important part of building a child’s willingness to learn so we will add socially-distanced fun into their day.”

The program’s hours, 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday, are designed to accommodate most working parent’s schedules and the charge is only $85 per child a week.  Due to pandemic restrictions enrollment is limited and preference will be made for working families.

The Salvation Army also operates a 4-star-rated preschool and childcare program on the Akron campus, making The Army a safe, affordable one-stop location for working families with younger siblings who also need care.

To enroll or discuss eligibility, call 330-762-8481.  Appointments will be made Monday through Thursday from 9:00AM to 3:00PM.

The Salvation Army continues to provide hope to the citizens of Summit County with daily hot meals, drive-up, walk-up and bus-in groceries, hot showers/hygiene kits and utility/mortgage and rent assistance as well as daycare and spiritual counselling.
Donations are needed to help cover the expanded demand for service during the extended COVID-19 era.  To make a donation to help The Salvation Army of Summit County serve families during this unprecedented time, call 330-958-3751.
