Salvation Army Providing Mortgage Assistance
Akron, OH, June 9, 2020 –– As Ohio slowly reopens its economy, many individuals are still in semi-isolation and out of work for the foreseeable future, with low-income wage earners the hardest hit. The Salvation Army in Summit County is releasing $50,000 in restricted funding to help families avoid mortgage foreclosure.
“I cannot imagine a more needed reason to tap into select restricted Army funds,” says Major Steven Stoops, Area Coordinator and Corps Officer. “Families in our community are behind in their mortgages and we want to help them keep a roof over their heads.”
Mortgage assistance due to Covid-19 impact will be available to Summit County residents who can meet the following criteria:
Must be behind in mortgage payments and/or facing foreclosure with proof
Employed for all of 2019
Temporarily laid off or permanently laid off due to Covid-19 impact
Resident of Summit County
“One-time payments directly to the lender will be provided,” said Rebecca Baker, LSW, Director of Social Service Ministries for The Salvation Army in Summit County, “but we anticipate high demand, and since the funding is very limited, it will go fast.”
“Even with temporary forbearance from the lender, homeowners will still be responsible for making their mortgage payments eventually. This delay will have a hard impact on families when the grace period is over,” said Major Stoops. “We hope this financial assistance will help ease that crush.”

The Salvation Army continues to provide hope to the citizens of Summit County with to-go daily hot meals, drive-up, walk-up and bus-in groceries, hot showers/hygiene kits and utility assistance as well as daycare and spiritual counselling.
