Bridging the Gap

Investing in their futures

The Salvation Army is committed to "Bridging the Gap" between success and struggle for at risk and high-risk youth.

The Salvation Army's Bridging the Gap program is designed to educate, motivate, and support families and youth, ages 12 through 17, who are on the verge of falling into the dangers of society. The program accepts applicants who have committed non-violent offenses, are having truancy issues, and/or behavioral concerns.

“The teens come here to do their homework, do chores for the corps, or play video games and pool,” says Dustin. “But that’s only half of it. Later in the day, we might have an older teen speak to the class about crime or drug addiction. The next day, we’ll welcome a representative from a bank who will talk about money and balanced budgets. On another day, the class will write resumes and practice job interviews.

Bridging the Gap provides a 12-week life changing experience, encouraging enrollees to get back on the track to success. The topics of discussions include: self- esteem; communication; money management; education; rights and responsibilities; employment; culture and diversity; relationships; morals; conflict resolution; and health (addiction, STD/HIV/teen pregnancy.)

Bridging the Gap participants attend the program two days per week for three-hour sessions. Within the curriculum, the site director or facilitator may coordinate a guest speaker, field trip or tours. The program has rolling enrollment to be available at the time of need. Applications are being accepted for the Westside and Kittanning corp.
