The goal of The Salvation Army’s Family Caring Center is not only to help families through difficult times, but also to enable them to find permanent housing and learn how to live productive and fulfilling lives.
Typical shelters for those experiencing homelessness are often gender specific, allowing either women and children or men only. The Salvation Army’s Family Caring Center, located in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood, accepts entire family units, offering a unique, family-focused program. The Family Caring Center has 18 individual rooms with a total of 85 beds for families in apartment-style units allowing the family to remain together in a safe, secure environment with three meals a day and specialized programming to help them get back on their feet.
Children’s activities are supervised while guardians attend classes in parenting, budgeting, resume-building and job skills, all with the intention of transforming their lives and transitioning them back into the community.

Through the Renovation Hope project, The Salvation Army is working to transform the Family Caring Center into a true home-like atmosphere. DesignGroup has donated their time to help The Salvation Army create a vision of various common areas and select colors, materials and furniture that will make the shelter feel warmer and more welcoming.
We invite you to help make this vision a reality! Explore the plans in the materials below.

The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division will be opening its doors to serve as a temporary overflow shelter in Pittsburgh for women without homes this winter. The additional space will complement The Salvation Army’s Family Caring Center. This emergency shelter will be open November 2024 through the end of March 2025 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. when the weather is 32 degrees or below. The overflow shelter will be on a first come, first served basis each night. Guests who stay overnight will receive lodging and dinner, breakfast and a snack each day. The Salvation Army will also offer access to case management services.
Families can become homeless for all sorts of reasons, including physical abuse, alcohol or drug dependency, eviction, fire or flood. Each family's situation is unique, and for that reason, we can provide accommodations for as long as their situation deems appropriate.
We can provide you with a variety of resources to you help get you back on your feet. We provide families with counseling and instruction on daily life skills. We also help families and individuals schedule appointments for housing, employment, job training, public assistance and school. In addition, we will provide your family with three nutritious meals per day, as well as snacks for your children throughout the day.
We feel it is important for children to have a sense of stability in their lives. Thus, we arrange for transportation so children can continue to attend their regular schools. We also provide children with daily reading programs, after school programs and homework assistance. We offer field trips, free play time, exercise, music, games, toys and books for children.

“I didn’t realize at the time that there was a different type of Army out there ready to help me, to have my back”
John, Amanda and their three young children found themselves at The Salvation Army's Family Caring Center after being evicted from their home. John served his country in the U.S. military for four years, but found himself struggling with unforeseen disabilities, resulting in him losing his security job. The family was welcomed to the Family Caring Center with open arms, and after participating in our programs, both John and Amanda found new jobs and a three-bedroom house they now call home.
“This facility allowed us to connect again…we became a family again. We sang songs; we read; we laughed; we joked…Once we got here, my kids began to relax. It’s not even about just the shelter they provide or the meals that they provide, but the resources were incredible. If you work the plan, work the program, the benefits are long-term.”
Andrea felt an urgent need to move away from her community when her abuser was to be released from jail. Without having an actual home to move to, though, she tried to make it work at a hotel, but finally had to go to a shelter. Though her children were concerned at first, the Family Caring Center lifted a big burden off her shoulders.
