Back-to-School Joy Thanks to The Salvation Army

Apr 15, 2023

A new school year is an opportunity for students to learn new skills, make new friends and discover new ideas. Yet, for many across Western Pennsylvania, the stress of not having the supplies needed can be a burden for families. Thanks to your generosity, The Salvation Army sets students up for success!

Our local back-to-school readiness initiatives help families who are facing financial pressures ahead of the new school year. Thanks to generous corporate and community support, The Salvation Army can fulfill basic needs, allowing local families to focus on their student’s education and development. At Pittsburgh Temple’s annual back-to-school bash, hundreds of backpacks, gently used clothing and pairs of shoes were provided to local families. Thanks to the generosity of the event’s sponsor in 2022, First National Bank, student haircuts were also available on site along with food, fun and a bounce house.

“A small thing like a haircut made everyone feel very special,” volunteer Christine Honsberger said. The haircuts were a highlight for a family who first connected with The Salvation Army through Pittsburgh Temple’s choice food pantry program, which welcomes individuals to come pick up fresh produce and pantry items as needed. The 8-year-old daughter, who attended the back-to-school bash with her parents and two older brothers, was so excited. “The stylist did a beautiful cut and the joy on the faces of the child and her mom were a delight to see,” Honsberger said.

The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division serves families and individuals in need in 28 counties. Each local Worship & Service Center strives to make sure every child in every zip code has the chance to succeed. God bless you for your continued support!
