(PITTSBURGH, PA) Aug. 18, 2021 – The Salvation Army North Boroughs Worship and Service Center is hosting a “Dance for the World” fundraiser and pow wow, bringing the community together for a cultural celebration of unity.
The event will take place Saturday, September 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Borough of Avalon Park, 708 New Brighton Road, Avalon, PA. This event is FREE, and families are encouraged to RSVP at www.salvationarmywpa.org/DFTW.
The Dance for the World, sponsored by First National Bank, will include cultural education & demonstration, delicious food, arts & craft vendors, free children’s activities, and the opportunity to win prizes. Click here to view a promotional video about this event.
Head Dancers include David and Leeyah Wanner; Head Drum is Thunder Nation; and the emcee is Aaron Stevens. All proceeds of this gathering support The Salvation Army’s World Services. This branch of the organization deals in social justice issues: human trafficking, poverty, starvation & emergency disaster services. This event works in support of the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women effort as we fight the epidemic levels of human trafficking that have swept the world.
This event is personal for Lt. Tylar Melfi, Commanding Officer of The Salvation Army North Boroughs Worship and Service Center, as he celebrates his own family’s Native American heritage.
“Dances are an important part of our collective history as Native Americans. While dance styles have shifted over the years, their meaning and importance have not. The outfits worn by the dancers evolve over time, and signify a vibrant and changing way of life,” Lt. Tylar said. “We are so excited to bring the community together on September 11 as a reminder of all of the many ways we are similar, and as a celebration of what unites us all In our humanity.”

Current COVID-19 protocols will be followed to ensure the health and safety of all attendees.
