Legacy of Love
Ephesians 5:2 – “Walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us”
For more than a century, The Salvation Army has carried out our mission of doing the most good, for the most people in need. It has been a blessing to be able to love and serve families and individuals across generations.
This commitment to carrying on the legacy of The Salvation Army can be seen in the story Linda, a native of Western Pennsylvania and a long-time supporter. Linda’s father was the eldest of nine children, and when he was only a teenager, he began working with his father in a mill to help support the family. Her father worked hard and felt the burden of ensuring the stability and survival of the family when resources were limited, and times were difficult.
One Christmas, they found themselves unable to spare money to buy gifts for the children. It was at that moment they connected with The Salvation Army and through this ministry, each of the eight children were able to open gifts on Christmas morning.
“The joy of that Christmas morning was infectious!” Linda recalled. “Years later, my father’s youngest sibling, Anne, was still able to recall the baby doll she received on Christmas and how special she felt knowing she was able to get her own toy.”
Linda’s aunt would go on to share this story for years, reminding those around her about the importance of providing joy and hope to those who may be forgotten during the busy holiday season, and all year long. Linda has supported The Salvation Army ever since hearing this story.
The Salvation Army is grateful for those like Linda and her family who, moved by love and gratitude, seek to continue this mission to care for the big and small needs of our neighbors.
