Meeting the Need to Feed
The Salvation Army is working to reduce hunger across Western Pennsylvania. Across our communities, including at The Salvation Army Chartiers Valley Service Center in Pittsburgh, the need is greater now than ever. From 2022-2023, the number of clients who attend the food pantry quadrupled in that location alone! Thanks to generous donors, this ministry has been able to double its service days each month and expand its offerings.
Families and individuals can pick out fresh produce and other items needed to prepare nourishing meals. The pantry prioritizes nutritious veggie and protein options, including fish and chicken, to nourish growing bodies of all ages. In addition to filling empty stomachs, the local food pantry has added boxes designed for the nutritional needs of older adults and has included even more well-balanced selections in the food pantry.
It’s about much more than groceries. For many, The Salvation Army has become a welcome haven in their new neighborhoods. With at least 28 countries represented in our client base, and at least 18 languages, The Salvation Army works to make sure the local pantry is accessible and meets the needs of all clients, including those who are new to the United States. The team works with partner agencies to ensure clear communication through translation services.
In addition to the food pantry, The Salvation Army Service Center started a program in April 2023 called Welcome Home. Through a strategic partnership, The Salvation Army provides welcome baskets to families who are resettling in our area. These baskets help meet basic, tangible needs with home essentials consisting of cleaning products, kitchen basics, tools and other essentials. The rising number of families with young children has created a new challenge – a shortage of diapers and formula. If the family has children, baskets of age-appropriate toys are also provided.
Thanks to continued support from the community, The Salvation Army can make sure the next generation will have the nourishment and tools they need to thrive and build a better future.
